Wish Upon a Star

A night fell and she found herself in space, rocking gently on a cold star that faintly pulsed its white.

It was cold everywhere. The star was small with five points, and Amber was perched on a point with her legs dangling on either side. She looked out and saw solitude—the clear endless sky and the rocking stars, some with people on them, most without.

Then something was approaching. Amber squinted to see it—squinted harder—and finally saw, as it came closer, that it was a crescent moon lying on its back, a moon-canoe. It rocked like the stars. There was someone on it, rocking along.

It was her mother.

Amber held up her hand to wave, but then she knew that her mother already saw her, that she was coming for her. And so she stood carefully on her star’s point, clutching another point for balance, and when the moon slid by, Amber jumped.

She sailed, the frosty air whistling around her, thinking she had missed the mother and the moon.

But the hands caught and her mother pulled her up, her glowing warm hands shooting heat down Amber’s arms. With just the simplest lift, her mother had taken her up completely onto the rocking moon, and they were gliding away from Amber’s star. With the warmth spreading, melting her icy skin from ear to toe, she wrapped herself round and round in her mother’s lap as if she were a snake or squirrel—as if she were small.

And she told her about Lingo.

She whispered the things he said and the things he did and the way he looked at her. She spilled out all the cruelties, every insult and every tear he’d made her shed. She talked and talked, leaving out nothing, and knowing that her mother heard every gasp and murmur and hesitation, no matter how quietly she spoke.

And when she was finished, her mother placed both hands on Amber’s curled body and scooped her up in both arms, tucking her into the cradle of the moon as though she were a delicate baby. For a moment she gazed down at Amber lying in this cozy little curve. Then she kissed Amber’s forehead with burning lips, raised up great cobalt wings, and launched herself into the night.

Rocking through space in the quiet of the moon, Amber slept, knowing her mother had healed Lingo and healed them all.

*

She woke, still full of the dream, and slowly closed her eyes again. She could never tell her mother about Lingo. It would hurt her mother so much, and she was already bowed under the stress and pain of her family’s smug pity. She didn’t need to know that Lingo said such terrible things about his Aunt Libby—or about his cousin Amber, for that matter.

So Amber would stay silent, silent as her mother was when Grandma tried to give her money, when the mall photographer made comments about their fatherless family portrait, when Jeannie, arm tight around her husband’s bicep, clucked her tongue and murmured, poor, poor Libby.
